Our Waiting Kids:

PROFILES OF WAITING KIDS – BRAINERD AREA

MALIK B:  Malik is a 9-year old 3rd grader who lives with his mom and two younger brothers in SE Brainerd.  He is a talkative, friendly youngster who is looking forward to having an adult friend.  He has a wide variety of interests including sports, bike riding, swimming, woodworking, drawing, cooking, painting, collecting Star Wars pieces, video games, and fishing.  Malik describes himself as follows:  “I’m a fast reader, I’m good at bike riding, I want to do BMX, I wear glasses.  I’m friendly, sometimes get angry, I’m talkative, have a good sense of humor, I’m generous, and I have two brothers.”  His dad does not live in the area and Malik has not seen him for about four years.  Mom feels Malik would benefit from having an adult partner because he needs a positive male role-model.  Mom and Malik are open as to what the adult should be like.  They just want him to be nice and to like kids.

LOGAN B:  Logan is a 12-year old 7th grader.   He has recently been placed back on our waiting list.  Logan has had two partners in the past, but both of those partnerships ended after a year.  Logan is a nice youngster, but he is very quiet and has a difficult time talking to people he doesn’t know very well.  When Logan first came into our program, he had limited friendships and was very much in need of the chance to do activities away from home.  He has developed some friendships with kids his own age now so that has helped Logan with social skills.  He lives in south Brainerd with his mom, an older brother and a younger sister.  His favorite subjects are gym, recess, science and math.  His favorite activities include all sports, bike riding, outdoors activities, fishing, and he loves animals.

PROFILES OF WAITING KIDS – CROSBY AREA

Andy is an 8th grade boy attending Crosby High School.   He is currently living with mom and older sister.  He has not had contact with his dad in over two years and needs a male role model in his live.  He is a very athletic boy that like football, snowboarding, skateboarding and drawing abstract pictures.  Andy would like to learn how to drive a real speed boat so a man with a boat would be ideal.

John is an 12 year old boy.  He loves the computer and video games.  Being new to the Crosby area he has not had the opportunity to make a lot of friends.   "I want to learn about many other fun things there are" John said.  He has not had the opportunity to learn to ride a bike and that is something he would like to learn.  He is going through counseling for Behavior Management and has made great progress.  John does have ADHD and some behavior problems but would do wonderful with a Kinship family with older kids.   John has been on the waiting list for over 1 1/2 years.

Miley is a 10 year old girl that loves animals and babies.  She currently has two cats, a parakeet and a gold fish the size of an orange.  She is living alone with her mom after her two siblings moved away.  This transition has been hard for Miley.  She is very active in sports. She plays volleyball, basketball, gymnastics and cheerleading.  She does have epilepsy but it is treated with medicine and it is controlled.  Miley was asked what she would like to learn how to do and she said “Drive a car and learn how to baby-sit”.  She is a very outgoing, talkative child.  She would do very well with a woman who is active and likes sports or a family with small children.

Did I know 7 years ago
when I said yes to Kinship
that Chance would
become a part of our lives
 well into the future?
Nope… but I don’t regret a moment of this kid
coming into our lives.”

PROFILES OF WAITING KIDS – LAKE COUNTRY

(Pequot Lakes, Pine River, Backus, Crosslake, Breezy Point, Nisswa)

BRADEN (Pine River) – an 8th grader who has had to adjust to a disabled parent and limited opportunity to experience activities away from home.  He does enjoy life on the farm and all the chickens, cows and horses – plus tinkering with machinery and building with his erector set.  He likes to read mystery books and play board games with his mom and siblings.  Finding someone to go 4wheeling, snowmobiling, or fishing would be a neat treat!  (Enrolled 10/09)

KASEY (Pine River) – is an on-the-go 7th grader who has a great relationship with her mom, but wants to be partnered with a couple or family.  Her father died when she was quite young and her brother is much older.  Mom has made sure she has been involved in a variety of school and community activities.  Kasey has adapted to many of her physical or emotional limitations and loves to be busy and social.  Both mom and daughter hope she finds a strong male role model and/or the chance to experience family life with other kids.  (Enrolled 10/09)
