Kinship Blog

Kinship Partners is a nonprofit youth mentoring organization serving families within Crow Wing county, southern Cass county and Staples/Motley area of Minnesota by providing positive role models to youth in our communities.

Why is mentoring important?  Our community’s future rests on the hopes and dreams of our children and youth.  Every child deserves a responsible and concerned adult who will provide guidance and support, help set and accomplish goals, and act as a positive role model.

Match of the Month:

Kinship Partners is pleased to honor Dan Jacobson Sr., Pequot Lakes, and Taylor Dowling, Pine River, as its newest Match of the Month.  Taylor has discovered fun can be found in hard work, as he learns about power tools, welding, and splitting wood from his mentor of almost 4 years.

Taylor will be graduating from high school this year and his mom credits Dan to encouraging her son to become “not just a man, but a good man.” Dan stepped in when Taylor lost his grandpa and has become his best friend, she says.  Dan rode with Taylor as he worked on his behind-the-wheel skills.  He joins Dan to help neighbors with odd jobs. The partners took a CPR course together. They both enjoy going to the dump to find discarded treasures needing simple repairs.  Taylor laughs that now the family can have a television in every room.

Dan’s fondness for Taylor is evident.  He says Taylor puts 100 percent into everything they do together.  A favorite winter activity is ice carving and Taylor has assumed many of the heavy lifting ice block removal responsibilities.  But the best times are the conversations shared.  Relationships, making healthy choices, being accountable for your actions, and serving others are only a few of these discussions.  As Taylor approaches graduation, Dan has been instrumental in helping him sort through career options.  He plans to follow in Dan’s footsteps and hopes to pursue a welding training program.

Kinship mentoring relationships usually start off focusing on fun activities and sharing new hobbies with a child.  The fun is still there, but Taylor is also learning the valuable lesson of looking beyond today and planning for tomorrow.
